The First Three Footprints
This worksheet is designed to help clients bridge the gap between their earliest snapshots and their current behaviors. “Your earliest memories are just starting coordinates. You choose the destination.”
The Goal: To identify the three earliest "snapshots" in your mind and uncover the subconscious instructions they provided for your adult life.

🏔️ Worksheet: The First Three Footprints
“Your earliest memories are just starting coordinates. You choose the destination.”
The Goal: To identify the three earliest "snapshots" in your mind and uncover the subconscious instructions they provided for your adult life.
Part 1: The Inventory of the First Mile
Close your eyes and find your three earliest distinct memories. Don't worry about the "order" of age—just the first three flashes of the past that appear. Write a brief description of each and the primary emotion attached to it.
Memory One: _________________________________________________
Primary Emotion: (e.g., Fear, Joy, Confusion, Safety, Shame) ___________
Memory Two: _________________________________________________
Primary Emotion: _________________________________________________
Memory Three: _______________________________________________
Primary Emotion: _________________________________________________
Part 2: Identifying the Internal Map Legend
Look at the memories above. Which of these "Operating Instructions" did your brain likely adopt based on those experiences? (Check all that apply)
[ ] The World is Safe: My needs were met; I am allowed to be joyful.
[ ] Hyper-Vigilance: I must scan for danger (violence, anger, or mood shifts).
[ ] The Burden of Secrets: I must hide the truth to keep things stable.
[ ] Emotional Regulation is External: I saw substances or behaviors used to "fix" feelings.
[ ] I am Invisible: My presence doesn't matter unless I am "useful" or "perfect."
[ ] Trust is Dangerous: Someone I relied on was unfaithful or unreliable.
Part 3: Connecting the Trail
Think about your current "stuck" patterns (in relationships, work, or self-care). How do those first three memories explain your current path?
The Familiar Feeling: "I find myself attracted to [type of person/behavior] because it feels like the same 'climate' as my Memory #____."
The Survival Tool: "I use [substance/behavior] to deal with the same fear I felt in Memory #____."
Part 4: Re-labeling the Trailhead
Now that you see the coordinates, you can choose to change the heading.
The Adult Truth: Choose one of those early memories. What would you say to that child now from your perspective as a capable adult? (e.g., "It wasn't your job to fix them," or "You are safe now.")
The New Footprint: What is one small action you can take this week that contradicts your old map? (e.g., If your map says "Hide," your new action is "Speak the truth.")
